The National Prayer Breakfast is an annual ecumenical event, where men and women from differing backgrounds gather together with our elected public officials to pray in the spirit of Jesus Christ. The National Prayer Breakfast began in June of 1964 and has continued yearly since that time. Because of the growth of the Prayer Breakfast over the last few years it was moved off Parliament Hill in 2008. The purpose of the National Prayer Breakfast is to invite leaders to meet in the spirit of Jesus Christ. The annual National Prayer Breakfast is a Christ centred but not just a Christian event. Rather, the aim is simply to meet in the spirit of Jesus and pray together. This means that we seek to love those around us just as Jesus loved those who were around him. It is recognized that Jesus is at the centre of the event when we share a spirit, which is both welcoming and compassionate. At the heart of the National Prayer Breakfast is a small group of Parliamentarians from different political parties who meet for breakfast each Wednesday morning while Parliament is in session. The annual National Prayer Breakfast is more visible, but the weekly meetings are at the heart of the overall event. These meetings provide opportunities for deeper friendships to flourish and grow. Through genuine friendships built on the Spirit of Jesus, it is hoped that individuals can discover ways of being together which cross many religious, social and political boundaries in order to bless the lives of many. The National Prayer Breakfast consists of four components: (1) National Student Forum, which enables young people from across Canada to meet other individuals of faith that work at various levels in government and politics. (2) A dinner the evening before the Prayer Breakfast (3) National Prayer Breakfast (4) A seminar designed to discuss and share stories of particular interest. Everyone is most welcome to attend and be part of this event. To request an invitation or for more information, contact: Phone number: 613-995-9098. |
